laceblade: Toby, Josh, and Donna of The West Wing, talking intensely (WW: 20 Hours in America)
[personal profile] laceblade
I know some people have weird squicks about RPF. Before I get into it, I just want to say that I listened to the podcasts I described below for months while having NO IDEA there was fic. Then [twitter.com profile] aileenwithan_a told me there was fic at WisCon, and I screamed at The Bar.

But it's all to say, you can enjoy the podcasts and most of this post on their own merits, and only seek out the fic if you choose to do so.
I've linked to fic under a locked post. That's also my plan going forward. I've seen the Glee cast have to put up with so much weird shit from tinhatter fans, :(

ANYWAY.
For months now, I've been listening to Pod Save America on a regular basis. During the 2016 election campaign season, it was a video semi-regular thing where Jon Favreau, Tommy Vietor, and Jon Lovett - former Obama White House staffers all - shot the shit about the campaign. They were very adamant that Hillary Clinton would win and that anyone who said otherwise were "bedwetters."

They were as shocked as the rest of us when Trump actually fucking won.
They stopped using The Ringer's resources and decided to create their own media empire. In honor of Trump, they named it Crooked Media. They now do ads on their shows and are trying to make money. (They also critique the ad copy WHILE READING IT ON THE AIR because Favreau/Lovett are both writers and cannot help themselves. Endlessly hilarious.)
You may have seen "Friend of the Pod" or "Repeal and go f$%& yourself" t-shirts - those originated with these guys.
Every Monday, Pod Save America releases an episode with Tommy, Favreau, and Lovett talking about politics and usually having a guest in the second half. Recently, they had Al Franken on. Every Thursday, Pod Save America releases a second episode of the week, with Favreau shooting the shit with Dan Pfeiffer, also a former Obama staffer/political strategist who's a few years older than these young bucks.

Tommy started his own weekly show called Pod Save the World. As Obama's former National Security Council spokesperson, Tommy will interview people like diplomats and other experts on international issues, usually trying to make it topical to things like North Korea, etc. He did invite Glenn Greenwald on his show after getting into it with him on Twitter, and it was actually one of the best episodes Tommy's done so far. I also really enjoyed his episode with Senator Tim Kaine about presidential war powers.

[twitter.com profile] deray got his own show, Pod Save the People, after appearing as a guest and having a great rapport with the trio. (I like listening to this but it's SO LONG I have only made it to the end of one of these shows ONCE lol.
Ana Marie Cox also got her own show called, "With Friends Like These," which is meant to address like, the red/blue cultural differences, basically. She's passionately liberal; members of her family are not. How do we as society function/etc.?

And finally, Lovett got his own weekly show called Lovett or Leave It, on which he basically does political standup with a rotating panel of guests made with a lot of his celebrity contacts in Hollywood. (Last week's included Sarah Silverman.) He has some semi-regular segments, such as his own Rant Wheel, because this man can literally rant on any topic.

I think the ratings for Pod Save America especially must be pretty high because they've been getting a lot of blockbuster guests lately - Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Tim Kaine, Al Franken, Chris Murphy, Susan Rice, and some others. Occasionally they'll do a live show in Los Angeles or elsewhere.

They do a lot of work with Ben Winkler to coordinator with Indivisble, and encourage activism on the part of their listeners. A lot of structure for people doing calls/resistance recesses/other stuff stems in part from them.

Some people have compared it to like conservative talk radio, but I think they're a little more objective than that (although I also could be biased). For example on Monday's show they basically ripped apart the Democrats' newly-unveiled "policy plan" that has jackshit holding it together.

Anyway, between this and twitter [where I do admittedly follow a metric fuck-ton of journalists], this is almost exclusively how I consume news lately.
It makes me laugh, every single episode, which is something we all need lately IMO.

I have long been interested in Jon Favreau because I find him incredibly attractive and because he had what was basically my dream job. Obama's campaign came at a weird time for me. The campus Obama campaign leader my age was a kid who'd gone to some smart kids week-long thing in Washington, D.C. the summer after we graduated high school [my friend Chad came too]. We were told by the real-life Joshua Lyman (under W) to get involved with a campaign, any campaign.
I took this literally and was an unpaid intern for Mark Green, first in his U.S. district office and then as a gubernatorial candidate. After that, when I graduated, no Democrats would hire me. The woman running the Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) at the time ran into a friend of mine [fellow page] on the street and told her it was because of my Republican experience. I couldn't even become an unpaid intern for a STATE SENATOR who was a Democrat because of it. (I became bitter and took a job on campus and am now at my second job on campus WHICH I LOVE but sometimes feel really bitter about what might have been.)
ANYWAY. This other KID was had Obama THANK HIM BY NAME and CLAP HIM ON THE SHOULDER when he did a campaign event at the Kohl Center on campus. I was so jealous. My jealousy of Jon Favreau and his youth was like 80x that.

Anyway, that was my hook into following Favreau on twitter and then jumping into these podcasts.

Jon Lovett is gay; Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor are ostensibly straight [Favreau just got married]. However, Lovett frequently complains about having to appear on tv with the two of them because of how hot they are. He has also referred to them as "bromosexuals."
On Chelsea Handler's show last week, they were talking about how much time the three of them spend together. "Sounds super gay," Chelsea says.
"Super gay," Favs agrees.
"NOT NEARLY GAY ENOUGH!" says Lovett.
Because of comments like these, and their chemistry and obvious affection for one another, we have ended up with: a fandom.

Jon Favreau and his wife Emily have a dog named Leo.
Jon Lovett owns a dog named Pundit (because that's how he feels about pundits) who is Leo's sibling.

Also bonus: Lovett and Tommy lived together when they lived in DC while working at the White House.

Here's a link to an actual transcript of part of an ad they did on Pod Save America's Monday episode this week for Sonos, a speaker company. [Link goes to tumblr, no images in post.] And here is the followup in the form of Facebook comments, where Lovett upholds Pundit's honor and accuses Leo of being a werewolf.

Here's a link to a tumblr post that has an embedded image of an Instagram post, plus screencapped comments from it. Tommy Vietor and Jon Favreau sitting side-by-side looking at their laptops, doing a Q&A. This was when they campaigned about health care in DC right after Favreau's wedding. In the comments, someone cheekily says they look like a before/after advertisement for self-tanner, and Tommy (the very pale one) says, "That is...so accurate." (They are all very self-deprecating.)

This is a gifset on tumblr of Lovett introducing Tommy Vietor on his Lovett or Leave It podcast. [It's a podcast but they do it in front of a live audience bc it's comedy.] It's hilarious because it's a perfect example of how Lovett talks, and because Tommy can't stop laughing even though Lovett is roasting him.
"Honestly, Tommy looks like a boat shoe became a person."
"He's the WASPiest thing I've ever seen. They based...they based many of the characters of the Sound of Music on his face."

Here's a tumblr gifset mostly of Tommy and Lovett interacting with one another.

Lovett is almost always angry/ranting but occasionally he gets really serious and is very eloquent when he does so. Almost like...underneath his bluster, he's an idealistic kid who writes really well and worked for Obama :*) Example!

SO YEAH. Anyway.....me, the person who never writes fic, have my first 5.3k fic in this fandom out with like 5 ppl [IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO BETA PLS LMK I NEED FEEDBACK.]

Hello I am tire

Failing at time management today, which is annoying. Still got some things done, but I reaaaally need to not play Starbound 'just for a little while', just. No, self. No. Do not pretend you will do the thing, just don't play until you've got everything else done that you want. :|

Bed now, yes. Sleeeeeep~

Today I:

- did a load of washing, including bringing it in, folding, and putting away (except the couple of things that didn't dry in time, so they're on the clotheshorse overnight)
- went for a walk with Mama
- while on said walk, went to the shops and picked up snacks for uni
- got a bunch of shit organised in my room
- found and put together a new knitting project for classes next week
- activated my new debit card, because somehow it's been four years since I last got one and it's replacement card time, whaaaat

So yeah. Pretty productive! Am pleased!

Considering seeking a housemate

So, I live in a really nice 100-year-old condominium here in Indianapolis. And I work downtown at Anthem, just a short bus or bike ride away.

Would you be interested in moving to Indianapolis? Think you could get along with me? Perhaps you might enjoy working a call center job at Anthem, too? I'd like to hear from you. I've got a spare guest bedroom in this condo, and would not at all mind having a housemate to take it up, and pay half the monthly $400 condo fees. It would also be nice if they were the sort of person who might enjoy watching movies and stuff with me. :) And I'd be happy to recommend you for a job at Anthem, if you wanted to apply there.

So, y'know…if you think that might be you, let me know.

Monday, bluh.

This week's Monday was actually terrible. Though not because Monday, because I decided to finally wade through the first round of Bureaucratic Bullshit Hell, which, uuuuugh.

On the plus side, while I was there I did my taxes! Which took literally less than five minutes. I wasn't timing myself, but according to chat timestamps, um, yeah. Probably something like 2m. Whole year's tax! I know I say this every year, but why, oh why can't all the government departments have their citizen-facing stuff as well organised and user-friendly as the ATO?? Whyyyyyy ;; (ILU ATO <3)

Other than that... went for a walk with Mama! Also POKEMON GO EVENT OH MAN I knew they'd reduced walk-distances for eggs but HOLY CRAP, 2km->700m, 5km->1.7km, whaaaaat. (I didn't have a 10K egg to put on, woe.) Super glad I got an incubator from levelling up last week!! ALSO. I caught an aerodactyl!!! IN MY HOUSE!!!! First one I've seen, and of course by the time we got back from walking I was out of balls so I had to race to the stop down the street and spin that a couple of times and pray it was still there when I got back AND IT WAS and even though I only had literally 4 normal pokeballs, I CAUGHT IT!!!! Whaaaaaat even, I don't know. Super happy though!!! :D

And now, bed. Where I will hopefully actually sleep, not stay up for a couple of hours with stress insomnia. *eyes last night*

Other than that... Mama and I made wayheaps progress on our puzzle, which is boring for you guys but exciting for us, yes. :3 Also, lots more Starbound home-world organising shit, orz. The system, it is VERY SLOW IN COMING TOGETHER, yup. But getting there, maybe?? Yes.

I really, really need to not watch let's plays of 3D open world games, omfg. /o\ Don't ask me why, but they make me SO DIZZY, it's horrible. I'm fine if I'm the one playing them, assuming I have a controller. If I have to try and play with a mouse, though, nope, same problem. Though actually I think she was playing keyboard-and-mouse style, so maybe it's just mouse-controlled cameras that are the problem. Anyway, I need to NOT DO THAT, because the kinda dizziness that comes with it DOESN'T GO AWAY unlike, say, motion sickness, so yeaaaah. Ugh.

In other news, my Cunning Plan to relocate shoes has worked. Definitely need some kinda dividers, because they don't stack as-is, but yes. Progress!! It feels weird, though, when I look at it. I'm hoping that will fade as I get used to it Being Different.

Tomorrow is be clean barfroom day, and hopefully also getting this freaking sorting-out-old-papers stuff done day, I didn't work on it today because reasons. And by reasons I mean I went op-shopping with Mama because she needed a thing, which is super draining. (Not that Mama BELIEVES me when I tell her this, but. Small steps. Small.)

Passed another milestone at work yesterday. Got my first three call audits in, and they (barely) averaged higher than the 95% mark required for audit quality. Which means I no longer have to send my created cases in to my team leads to look over for me. I'm a real boy now!

I'm really settling in well at the job, I think. The vast majority of calls I get are simple cases where I look up a code, find it needs no pre-authorization, and let the caller know and send them on their way within three minutes or so. A dozen or so calls a day require more effort, filling out a computerized form specifying service date, procedures, attending doctor and facility, and so forth—generally, ten to fifteen minutes or so, maximum. And I get a few calls from ordinary members, mostly ones who dialed the wrong department by mistake and I can send on to the right place.

Even the 11 to 8 shift is turning out not to be as bad as I'd feared, on the whole. The hour lunch does give me time to go farther afield for lunch, run errands, try new places, and so on. And the last couple hours of the shift, when the only places still open and calling in are in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, are quiet enough that I can read a book nearly uninterrupted. I can't read ebooks on the computer the way I could in the old customer service job, alas, but I have plenty of print books on my shelves that I've always meant to get around to but never had found the time for yet. I've worked through several of those so far.

Another really nice thing is that there's a medical clinic for employees and members built right into the office building's front lobby. I checked out a sleep study machine from them a few weeks ago, and had a blood draw there on Monday, and today I go in to find out the results. It's certainly a lot easier going in to see a doctor where I work than it is having to trek afield to some other medical center!

The one thing I need to bear in mind is that I only barely passed those audits. I find myself making the same kind of mistake repeatedly on some of my calls, and I need to evolve coping strategies to make sure I cut that out. I need to make sure I keep my average up; I don't have any excuse not to get 100% every time.

Wheeee

Also there's a hot dog event on the pet site, draw a hot dog custom and get it uploaded for free, and even though I don't like hot dogs and wasn't planning on doing one, well...

I have two large piles and a small pile on my floor right now. Recycling, binders/folders/etc that are now empty, and the stuff I'm keeping, in that order. Mama's getting very ARGH about it, because for whatever reason she's fairly invested in my room being tidy, but I've still got about a third to go, so yeaaaaah.

Still. A LOOOOT of stuff going out! Which means I have more room for things, so HOPEFULLY I'll be able to get some stuff more organised! Haven't 100% decided what I'm going to move into that space, there's a bunch of possibilities. Might move my tech stuff? But I have hopes that I can rearrange my desk so that it both fits on here and is easily accessible, so maybe not... *ponders* May have to play around with things until I find something I'm happy with, honestly.

Though I just Had An Idea - not for this stuff, but for some other stuff - so I might try that out before I actually go to sleep. Yes. Goal for this break, btw, is to find somewhere to keep my shoes, so they're not in a pile on the floor for another six months, hahaha.

But! I did do stuff today! Tidied shit, went for a walk with my parents, started clearing out some old uni stuff - which, speaking of. I've been going through and throwing out TEN YEAR OLD ESSAYS, what the actual fuck is this shit. Just. How has it been ten fucking years since I started this whole higher education thing?? And I'm still in fucking first year! Time is such bullshit, I swear.

Also did a bit of art and read things and yeah. Plenty of stuff happened! Just um whoops late now. >>;

Went for a walk with Mama, and played a lot of Starbound. That's... more or less it haha. Didn't really mean to play THAT much game, but, well, sometimes that happens.

I DID get a Hat Pikachu, though! :D Am verra pleased, now I have at least one of ALL the special edition pikachu! (Do I care about pikachu? No. But they're collectable!! And if I get enough candy I'll make them all into special edition RAICHU, which are clearly 1000x better. >D)

Ugh, it's been freezing today. I've been coughing a bunch even though I haven't gone outside, the ambient temperature's just been... not good. Have spent most of the day wrapped up in blankets, hahaha!

I did, however, get a bunch of dusting done, which is nice since it was on this week's Cleaning To Do List. Using Trello for that seems to be working well, too, which is nice. :3

And now, TO THE DOONA!!! And blankets. And yes. >>;;

Also a bunch of breaks because omg tired nao, so A+ self-care, I think? Like, I didn't start to do anything new until I felt up for it, no pushing through, which, good going self! But also forward momentum, yaaaay~

Dinner at Grandma's was a bit much for me - not that it wasn't fun, just, I was Done about an hour before everyone else was, siiigh. Still. It was definitely worth the effort, which is always nice. :3 Cousins continue to be Very Loud, but I doubt that's going to change at this point, haha.

And now I curse my stupidity in staying out of bed this late when it's this cold, because omg fingers stiff not fun!!!

For the first time this year at WisCon, there was a drabble challenge, with results posted in a collection at the AO3: WisCon 41 Drabbles.
I particularly enjoyed the drabbles by [archiveofourown.org profile] j00j and [archiveofourown.org profile] TheAndy, but am probably biased because they are friends.

It's a small collection, but one of high quality, and I hope that they do it again next year. The idea of collecting works created in the same physical location, over a specific period of time, is pretty cool. Also, I was at the Best Superpowers for Banging panel, which inspired the "Lube Jets" drabble. To say that the panel was hilarious feels like an understatement.

I have so many bad habits, siiiigh.

Anyway, Mama and I went down the shops today, since one of the local cheap-things shops is closing down, and I managed to get some handkerchiefs!!! That are ACTUALLY NICE!!! What is this even. :D

There were also adorable fluffy Christmas pjs, with cats in santa hats, or reindeer in glasses... but unfortunately they were all too small for me. :( O WELL.

Also picked up some darning needles, because as Mama says: you can never have too many of them. (I swear the fuckers play hide-and-seek on you, they're even worse than tablet pens...) So yeah. Pretty successful trip. :3
