Rice!!!!

So I went down to the shops today, and I got rice! It's sushi rice, specifically! So tasty! I tend to buy Japanese rice, but my parents tend to buy basmati - which is also good! I like it a lot! But it means it's what we usually eat so when I'm the one getting rice I get something else for a change. And I DO really like Japanese-style rice varieties, so yeah. Happy me! :D

Did mean that I couldn't actually get a lot of other food, though. XD;; 5kg bag takes up most of my backpack! Add the milk (and they only had 3 liters, AGAIN, wtf), and yeah. Not a lot. Soooo I'll have to go back down again tomorrow and get meat and veg to go in curry! I remembered I had a packet of Golden Curry mix so I'mma make that! :D

Other than that, nothing major today. Reading, minecraft, you know. Standard me things.

Floor more or less done!

There're a few details that need doing (buffing out some paint marks, moving the furniture back in, that kind of thing), but the floor is pmuch done! Finally! \o/ This pleases kitty. Both kitties, actually. And also me. Three kitties. Yessss.

Also holy shit did you know my bed-couch is SUPER COMFORTABLE? Because it is. Technically the one in the spare room is actually a bed - it's the fold-away kind, and mine's just a standard two seater but!!!! It is SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE OMG I'm love it.

I have however hit a snag on sitting at my desk - APPARENTLY, sometime while I've been stuck in the spare room, my legs decided they didn't need to worry about my usual sitting positions, and now that I'm back where I normally sit they're aching. :/ :/ :/ To be fair I do sit in a lot of weird positions, and they're specifically complaining about being braced against the edge of the desk, which has a bunch of my weight behind it at least half the time... BUT STILL. C'MON LEGS. You didn't USED to complain about this, and it hasn't been THAT long!!!

Anyway back to my super! comfortable! and snuggly! couch yesssss, is nap tiem nao.

I quite possibly have the luckiest chooks alive.

White chook lives!!!! Found her when I went to let the chooks into the run this morning! She was hiding behind the chook shed, which she definitely wasn't yesterday, and she went in extremely easily, so I think she really wanted to go in hahaha.

Anyway they are NOT getting out of the run any more nope. Fucking miracle they're all still fine tbh!

Other than that, I! Am back!! In my room!!!!! Aaaaaaaa so happy~~

Getting the desktop moved was a major pain in the ass and took like an hour and a half because after trying very hard to not need to I had to take the screens off the arms and put them back on when the stand was in place. Bleh. I mean, worth it to have the desk space but still, annoying.

Anyway now I can sit at my computer without my legs complaining too much, and also have things at the right height and also. Desk space. I missed it.

I also have an inkling my brain's gonna cooperate better with some things in here, but that remains to be seen. Hopefully, though!

But first, naps!

Fox Attack

Soooo this afternoon I heard the chooks freaking out again, and I ran out AND THERE WAS A FOX. CW: Predication, potential (still unconfirmed) animal death. )

Anyway, maybe the white chook was hiding somewhere I couldn't find her, maybe she's gone, hard to say right now. :/ But since it was, you know, the middle of the afternoon I could actually look around properly this time, so I don't have high hopes. Find out in the morning, I guess.

I think today was actually the first time I've seen a fox in person, unless I maybe saw one at a zoo or something? I don't think I have though. I'd be happier about it if it wasn't for the fact they shouldn't be on this fucking continent at all in the first place, ugh. Fucking invasives. Haet.

Ugh... phone calls...

Spent about an hour on the phone this morning, which was. Extremely unfun. But! I got the thing from Friday fixed up and sorted out, yay! Now just gotta wait for a thing to show up on one of the websites - phone lady said it'd take about an hour, but it wasn't there after I had a nap so... :/ Will see if it's there tomorrow, and if not I guess I'll get to call back uuuuuugh. Still, progress!

Not a whole lot other than that - I slept most of the day away, which I'm not mad about, given how fucking tired I was. Sibling didn't come over, so still waiting on that. Hopefully tomorrow! My parents are back next week, so if I'm still stuck in here that would be Extremely Bad and also someone would end up dead. Not sure who! But it's not a tenable situation, n o p e.

Anyway, time to go back to napping, yes. >: I should have maybe gone a bit earlier but I was almost done rereading a fic and... yeah. >>;;

Meh, it was good enought to read on vacation but what should I care about a typically US teenager's heart troubles. Back to the free library with it.

En VF, "Le petit ami de ma copine" et je me doutais que ça allait manquer d'ambiguité entre les persos féminins, mais c'est quand même décevant à quel point.

Another Two Weeks of Stuff Happening - Early August 02025

A quick update to start: One of the banks backing PayPal purchases in several currencies has decided to stop processing or accepting Steam transactions, making PayPal unavailable in regions that use those currencies. The slug says that PayPal doesn't support the transactions, but the article is quick to point out that it's actually one of the banks that has withdrawn their support for Steam transactions using PayPal. So we continue to get reminded that if the system of money decides that you're not allowed on their platform, it doesn't matter what the jurisdiction or the law says is allowed or not, you're banned from being able to do anything that involves the banking systems. People in places where cannabis is currently legal have already figured this out, because they continue to be denied access to financial transaction systems, and sex workers and their clients have figured this out, because they're regularly targeted for these kinds of purges and exclusions, but gamers are starting to understand how much their freedom to purchase and play works depends not on the laws or the interpretations of the laws, but on the control exerted by payment processors over the platforms they want to buy and play on.

Valve Corporation said that MasterCard was definitely pressuring them to delist and deplatform adult content, through the intermediaries of the banks and processors, after Mastercard claimed it made no such demands of the platforms. And I'm sure they also didn't say they'd been looking for the excuse once the group that was trying to get their attention did it.And they'd probably deny that they've been at this sex-negative prudery and denying access to their networks for legal, non-obscene content for at least two decades at this point.

A neat thing: a complete run of Computer Entertainer, one of the first video game magazines in the U.S., has been digitized and made available in Creative Commons, by the Video Game History Foundation. Hooray for accessible history!

Also because if you don't have history available to you, you start thinking that the methods of the past are superior to the methods of the present, when what you want is to draw forth the good things of the past into the present. The "90s parenting" being described here is entirely possible in the current decade, without any need for retro objects or such to bring back nostalgia along with what you want to actually do. Such nostalgia often makes people blame things improperly for creating the current world, or to start thinking that simply removing those objects will be enough to bring back the perfect world.

The only way not to build the Torment Nexus is not to build the Torment Nexus, and we have many reasons why we need to stay in the job that's going to build the Torment Nexus. Take care of your souls, and perhaps consider that if you're building the Torment Nexus, you don't have to do it at high speed or efficiency while you look for something that isn't on Team Torment Nexus. (What's also well-noted there is that there are a lot of people on Team Torment Nexus who have rationalized their participation, or who think this really is the way to go,.)

As we move into yet another year of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, what's been learned and what best practices are good to continue. Including vaccination, even though, as we'll see in the later parts of the post, the anti-vaccination squad are currently running the health house.

A primer on the history of what the phrase "land grant university" means. More often than not, it's "land seized from Native nations, then sold, and the proceeds used to fund the construction and operation of the university" instead of something like "the state legislature granted land for the university from their own stores and funds."

The civility of the women's game (of football) has some fans of the men's game feeling like they're being fed their vegetables with no chance of dessert. We hear that kind of thing in the States as well, even with a top-ranked women's team. Am reminded of statistics I was quoted that suggest most men believe a crowd of about 17% women is 50% women, and a 33% woman crowd feels more like 90% to them. Because they're focused far too much on the thing they don't believe belongs there that they over-represent it in their heads.

And the rest inside )

Last out, something good in the technology: the engineers behind the Jupiter camera called Juno have been heating and then cooling the components to fix various radiation-related damage that has been seen on images, and the fixes bring the camera back to within specifications, albeit temporarily each time.

And the increasingly misnamed Sacramento Music Archive, and the progress being made on digitization, archiving, and sharing of concert recordings made by one person and/or the collections that have been given to them, many of which are for groups that never made it big, and some of which are previously-unknown performances, demos, or material for very big entities indeed.

A supposedly easy method for folding fitted sheets that they do fold appropriately and aesthetically pleasing-ly.

Naps plz

Soooo I got about four hours of sleep last night, before kitty breakfasttime. And then I did, as planned, stay awake and shower and went shopping! (Eventually.) I had a bit of a nap this evening before kitty dinnertime, but couldn't've been more than an hour and a half.

I am so tired. And yet! Here I am! Awake at fucking 3am again! Why, self. Just. Go to bed???

The problem is probably habits, and also that I am so used to being tired it's no longer a trigger to actually go to sleep. Which is very stupid, and yet! Brains!!! I have probably had this realisation before but I am too tired to remember having it, sigh.

Anyway, I'm gonna nap again now! And hopefully sleep quickly and also go the fuck back to bed after breakfast tomorrow...

Improvement!!!

Rather than throw out all that pancake mix, I did a research, and it turns out there's stuff you can add to make things less overwhelmingly bicarb soda-y! Mainly acidic stuff, which in my case means lemon juice (since I have that on hand). Also cocoa, which isn't something that I'd've thought was acidic? Must be just very slightly. And I was thinking of adding cocoa to a pancake ANYWAY, so of course I did that.

First pancake results are: still terrible soda aftertaste, but MUCH more manageable. I could actually eat it! :D So, clearly, next time I just needa add more lemon! Alternatively, add more flour and a little bit of sugar to the actual mix. Might try both, next time! Even with the acid neutralising the flavour, the pancake came out a bit spongy, which is... not the right texture for a pancake. That is a cake-cake texture!

Still, I'm happy I was able to make it palatable! :3 Less waste yessss. (Chooks very happily gobbled up the inedible one, too. And hey, they deserved a treat after their big scare, so it's basically not at all wasted! Ish.)

Need to shower tomorrow and go and get milk again orz orz orz. I am probably drinking too much milk but also. Milk is delicious. Might go to the little supermarket, which is by the asian grocery, and get dumplings and stuff this time. Haven't had dumplings for a few weeks, and they sound really good...

Not the world's most successful day, honestly. :(

Sooo I was SUPPOSED to have my stupid appointment today but did I??? No. Because they didn't call me. >/ Same thing happened to Sibling, so that's something but ARGH. (I did in fact call them to let them know, but the auto-responder said they had too many calls and hung up on me. Which is just. FFS. Will try again Monday.)

I also tried making pancake mix! Alas, while it did the whole turn into pancake thing just fine, it tasted overwhelmingly of baking soda and so was pmuch inedible. :/ :/ :/ Soooo that's a whole lot of flour (and stuff) that's going in the compost tomorrow! But at least it's stuff we had laying around already?? Clearing out the cupboard if nothing else...

Chooks are fine, and the cats are cute, though so nothing's too bad! :D Gonna nap now, yessss.

Chooks Safe!

When I went out this morning, the red chook was there! :D :D :D She's fine, despite all the feathers everywhere!

I didn't see the black chook all day, which was worrying, but when I went to put them to bed...

Three chooks in a coop!

No idea where she was hiding, but she's safe and that's the important thing. :D

Other than that, Sibling did come over and did a couple of things. Pointed out a few bits where I need to keep touching things up on the skirting boards, but they're definitely close to done (yay!). Won't be back until next week, so got quite a while to go out there and give various bits extra coats (there are a few bits where I had to sand back, and while MOST of the board is fine...). So I'm feeling somewhat better about that.

Chook Attack :( :( :(

Content Warning: Possible Animal Death (nothing confirmed as yet) )

Other than that... slept stupid late, which was annoying, but I DID manage to get down to the optometrist before they closed. Alas, they can't do anything about the coating, the lenses just need to be replaced. :/ Soooo that's even higher up on my to-do list. Just gotta wait for, you know, money. Ugh. Might even be worth taking cash out of my savings for it, buuuut I'd rather not.

Also did another coat of paint on all the skirting boards! Will see how they look tomorrow, I'm hoping that the small ones are really done this time, but they had a few mysteriously appearing rough bits I had to sand back today, so that might. Also happen. Again. :|

Dunno if Sibling is gonna be over tomorrow, but if so will get a second opinion on stuff. Answer may well be 'jfc how are you SO BAD at this???', but at least then I'll know.

And now to bed! >: Or. Soon. There is a cat on my lap and I don't really want to annoy her...
